I like HIM and think Ville Valo is a fantastic singer but live they seem to be a bit hit or miss. On their lastest tour of Britain some of the gigs were brilliant but some sounded awful. I get the impression Ville only puts some effort into singing some of the time, not all the time and this is not the way to keep fans. I saw HIM in Portsmouth and they were fantastic but my friend who saw them in Wolverhampton was very dissapointed and said Ville sounded awful. Another friend who went to both London gigs said on the Saturday Ville sounded crap and you could hardly hear him, and he didn't seem to want to be there, whereas on the Sunday it was brilliant and his voice was amazing. If this band want to stay popular they will have to improve and give 100% at every gig.

I found this review of the latest HIM gig in New York. Doesn't sound good does it. : I have very bad news. They are starting to review the show. This is from the New York Post
NY Post DRUNKEN VALO TRASHES H.I.M. SELF By DAN AQUILANTE
November 17, 2004 -- BOOK Ville Valo for being DWS — that's drunk while singing.
Valo, lead singer for Finnish quartet H.I.M., was so smashed onstage at Irving Plaza that he took what started out as a fairly good set and proceeded to crash it into the dirt.
Valo appeared to be the only band member to indulge — and his behavior during a New York gig, the band's most important concert since it emerged on the Scandinavian music scene in the late '90s, obviously embarrassed the rest of the quintet.
As they delivered lite-metal with solid musicianship, Valo slurred his way through the songs, forgot words and sang so softly that the lyrics were inaudible.
If he took a lesson from dead rock stars like Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison or Janis Joplin, he'd know: If you're going to get wasted onstage, you better be fantastic.
He wasn't.
Instead of projecting the demeanor of a songful, sinful, bacchanal-loving hedonist, he was more like a pathetic skell who wandered onstage and got caught in the lights.
His performance worsened as his bender progressed, save for his midconcert rally with two covers, Chris Isaak's "Wicked Games" and Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man," which he unfortunately credited to the late Johnny Cash.
On records, Valo sounds like a talented fellow, but this concert proved that he has no respect for the audience or himself. More disturbing than his drinking was how he'd take a swig of beer and toss the remainder of the can over his shoulder to spill onto the stage.
Not only was it a waste, a kid had to scramble on his hands and knees to wipe up the mess. Valo drank a six-pack that way, demeaning an associate each time.
He's a singer with an ego bigger than his talent who thinks the world of himself. Too bad he's such a terrible judge of character.

"He's a singer with an ego bigger than his talent who thinks the world of himself" I don't think he deserved this,he has HUGE talent, and it doesn't matter if he is alcoholic or he doesn't care about fans....i know hundreds of bands who they didn't even appear on stage, coz the were too drunk or so...Don't know why everyone thinks that HIM are perfect...Ville smokes and drinks like hell so this not suprising me at all...but that doesn't mean that he has no talent...he had just bad day...too bad for fans..

. If this band want to stay popular they will have to improve and give 100% at every gig. i am not sure if extreme popularity is what they really want. i love HIM...I used to consider this band as one of the main reasons of my life. things have changed, but i still do respect them....i don´t try to judge them. it is only very confussing...i mainly focus on listeng to music. and HIM music does me good....but I have felt in something new for me....of course eyes...but as long as this part of messageboard is dedicated to HIM.... 23. 11. 2004 (16:54) X Ohttp://www.livejournal.com/users/sayshesapoet/38387.html ....don´t know really what to say. can´t even discuss it or take it apart....simply very suprising and marvelous at the same time.

The link doesn't work for me either. I still like Him and think Ville has got a fantastic voice but I really want to hear some new stuff from them. Ville did sing an acoustic song at the recent Portsmouth gig which he said would be on the new album. Couldn't hear it very well but it did sound good. I look forward to the new album, whenever that may be.
